San Antonio Home-Service Marketing Tips

I'm Jon. I write about Google Business Profiles and local marketing for service businesses here in San Antonio. This page is where I put the small, practical stuff: things you can do yourself in 15 or 20 minutes without hiring anybody, me included.

No jargon, no “secret hacks,” and no promises about rankings. Google decides that part. These are just the basics done right, one at a time.

Weekly email

One useful tip a week, by email.

Each week I'll send one short, practical tip for getting found on Google and running a tighter home-service business. It takes about two minutes to read. Unsubscribe anytime.

I'll only use your email to send these tips. No spam, and I never share or sell your address.

Three tips

Add your Google services five at a time

Your Google Business Profile can have a Services section, and it's easy to set it up once and never touch it again. Here's a simple habit to fix that: add your services in batches of five, once a week, until the list matches what you actually do.

Why five? It's a 15-minute job, so you'll actually do it. And it keeps you writing real descriptions instead of rushing through 30 items in one sitting.

How to do it

  • Open your profile on Google Search or Maps and choose Edit services.
  • Start with Google's suggested services. Select any that match work you do.
  • If something isn't listed, use Add custom service. Name it the way a customer would say it: “water heater replacement,” not “WH install.”
  • Add a one- or two-sentence description: what's included and which parts of town you cover.
  • Save, and jot down which five you added.

Two rules: Google says custom service names shouldn't include prices or phone numbers, so prices go in the price field. And only list what you really do.

Not every business category gets the Services editor. If you don't see Edit services on your profile, that's why. Next week, add the next five.

Answer the questions Google asks next

Google Search has a feature called AI Mode. People type a question, get an answer, and then keep asking follow-up questions in the same conversation.

For a home-service business, that changes what a useful web page looks like. Say someone searches “water heater repair San Antonio.” The next questions might be: Gas or electric? Repair or replace? Does it need someone today? What does a service call cost?

If your website doesn't answer those, someone else's page may answer them instead.

A 20-minute exercise

  • Open Google in a private window, switch to AI Mode, and search your main service plus “San Antonio.”
  • Write down every follow-up question it asks or suggests. Repeat for your top three services, starting fresh each time.
  • Open your own service pages. Does each question have a plain answer?
  • Add the missing ones as a short Q&A at the bottom of the page. Use your real policies: trip fee, typical timelines, areas you cover, jobs you don't take.

Don't make anything up to fill a gap. If the honest answer is “it depends,” say what it depends on.

Your Google profile doesn't charge per click

Here's a comparison that's easy to lose track of when you're busy. With Google Ads search campaigns, you generally pay when someone clicks your ad. Google's Local Services Ads work differently: you pay for leads instead of clicks.

Your Google Business Profile is free to create and manage. Google doesn't bill you when someone taps your listing, asks for directions, or clicks through to your website.

That doesn't make ads bad. Ads can get you in front of people quickly. But you pay every time, and your free profile is there whether or not you spent anything that month.

Before you raise an ad budget, check the free part

  • Is every service you offer listed, with a short description?
  • Are your hours, service area, and categories correct?
  • Have you added recent photos of real jobs?
  • Are you replying to reviews, good and bad?
  • Have you posted an update in the last month?

If you answered “no” to two or more, start there. It costs you time, not clicks. I can't promise rankings (nobody honestly can), but fixing these is a sensible first step.

Not affiliated with or endorsed by Google. Google changes its tools and rules often, so check Google's own help pages for the latest.
